Dartmoor National Park

The Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA) recognises that although the National Park is for everyone, not everyone feels confident to visit Dartmoor or knows what to do when they get there.

Tourism is a very important part of the Dartmoor economy, but with its rugged landscape, inaccessibility and emphasis on outdoor activities, Dartmoor has not been as accessible as it might have been for people with a cognitive impairment. The recent re-opening of a rail line to Okehampton created an opportunity for people who would not otherwise have been able to visit the National Park.

The Dartmoor National Park Authority project for ENLIVEN aimed to support individuals in their first few visits to the moor and to help them gain confidence and independence in future visits. The project aimed to trial a new activity program and explore opportunities for future support. The first objective was to work with partners at the Tavistock Memory Café, Cycling Without Age and the South West Lakes Trust to deliver a cycling event at Burrator Arboretum. The project also formed a working group to co-create a Dementia Friendly Action Plan.
