The National Coal Mining Museum for England holds an important collection of machinery and other artefacts connected with mining heritage and welcomes over 30,000 visitors per year. In addition to its indoor and underground exhibitions, it also has extensive outdoor and nature spaces, including a nature trail, woodland and a pony centre.
The project aimed to make the Museum’s outdoor spaces more accessible and welcoming to people with cognitive impairment and sought to strengthen community engagement with former mining communities living with dementia. The Museum made contact with Wakefield Alzheimer’s UK who supported the establishment of a consultation group to co-create a dementia-friendly action plan. This initiative was one of the ENLIVEN arts projects supported by the photographer Ian Beesley, who has experience in working with people living with dementia.
